Welcome to The Captain's Galley!
Southwest Harbor's oldest lobster pound
Southwest Harbor
The Captains Galley is located on Southwest
Harbor's busy waterfront used year-round for commercial fishing,
including lobstering, scalloping and shrimping. In the summer it becomes
filled with graceful power and sail boats, many of which are built in
the area. Thus, the town integrates the best of the commercial and
recreational worlds of many Maine seafaring towns. Visit us on the dock
at the Captains Galley and get a sense of this unique atmosphere...

Our place
The Captains Galley offers a take-out menu with an
emphasis on fresh, locally caught seafood delicacies. All of our seating
is at picnic tables outdoors on the dock with about half the seating
protected from the weather..
Beals is open (hours generally 7 AM to 4 PM) year
round to sell fresh products including lobsters, clams, scallops, shrimp
and fish when in season. Any of these can be shipped next day. Contact
(207) 244-3202 for availability, pricing and shipping information.
Suzanne Beal Madeira is part of a third generation
to work in the family seafood business in Southwest Harbor. Following
completion of studies at Mount Holyoke College in 1969, she and a
sister-in-law started what is now known as "The Captains Galley" by
selling a few lobster rolls on the dock at Beal's Lobster Pier.
Her husband, Pete Madeira, was Business Manager of
Beal's Lobster Pier for sixteen years. They have leased and operated the
retail food service operation at Beal's since 2005. Suzanne and Pete
hire a crew of young men and women to provide the great service our
customers expect. Today the crew is mostly made up of high school and
college students from the local community along with a number of foreign
students working under the J-1 Visa program of the US State Department.
We have visited Beals a couple times during our trips back East and the
lobster is absolutely delicious. First heard about this place when
President Bush (lived in Kennebunkport, ME) ordered lobsters from here
and had them flown in. We live in California and have ordered
lobsters from here several times and are flown overnight and are fresh
and alive in a container and you cook them
yourself. Very fresh and delicious. You can call them at
207/244-7178. A bit pricey, but great for special occasions.
Imagine Maine lobsters being delivered straight to your door!!!!
