THE RIO VISTA BASS DERBY

We did this event several years ago and I wasn't all that impressed.  Our booth was located quite far down the street and traffic flow was minimal.  Other booths were crowded together closer to the carnival area, etc. and vendors down there seemingly did much better.   This event is held during the second weekend of October and we have had other shows during that time.  In 2008, we did the Monterey Columbus Day Festival and the year's before we were at Bass Lake.

The first time we did the event, it was extremely hot with temps in the low 100's.  It can get hot out there in October and it did.  We 'commuted' from the Bay Area and it seemed like such a long drive along the Delta up to Rio Vista.  The last time (and I mean, LAST TIME) we did the event, it was not as warm, but the winds picked up during the day and I guess we had some pretty strong gusts.   In the wee-hours of Sunday morning, the winds increased and blew several canopies over.  We had two canopies up and the one on the right-hand side was heavily damaged.  We had allowed a neighbor to tie his canopy to ours and he didn't have much weight to it.  Unfortunately, he only had one end tied to us and the canopy went airborne while still attached and took out the whole side of our canopy.  One leg broken and a couple cross-sections above were broken and a couple more twisted.  And the whole side was opened up...Thank gosh nobody stole from us (I think).

On the day before, there was this lady riding around on her white horse.... or maybe we can say that 'she was on her white stallion'.  She went up and down the street letting all the kids touch the horse, etc. and providing some attention for the skinny, 45-year old lady.  When the two of them (the horse and her) strode by my canopy the horse dropped several huge, smelly loads about 3 feet in front of us.  I walked over and asked her if she would get it cleaned up and she told me that it wasn't her fault, so she refused to get it cleaned.   For the next hour or so, several dozen people stepped in it and dragged the remains all over the place.  And of course, it smelled pretty bad.  The pooper scoopers came by about 90 minutes later and cleaned it up.  Too late, though.  They followed the horse's trail up and down the street cleaning up that awful mess.

Anytime you have a carnival, you know that you are going to have lower sales.  Most of the people spend their money in the carnival area and also buy food and do not pay much attention to the vendors.  Like I said, some vendors did decent, but we did not and will never return.  Also, along with the carnival comes late hours and we didn't hang around because there would be no foot traffic coming our way, except for those people entering and leaving the festival.

If you are visiting the festival, then it's okay as you have a numbe of things to do.  As a vendor, uh uh. No way.

I just checked their website  http://www.bassfestival.com/vendors.asp  and booth fees are $250 and up for a 10x15..
